Cheongsam & the story behind them.

The Way Zhang Ziyi Epitomizes Elegance

Famous Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi took everyone’s breath away at this year’s Met Gala, also known as Met Ball, which is an annual fundraising gala for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City.

The Carolina Herrera gown she was wearing combined the ballgown silhouette with the Mandarin collar seamlessly while the Cindy Chow ruby pins glistened gloriously on the ethereal white dress. This is a perfect example of East-meets-West fashion design.

If you love this Asian-influenced ballgown but don’t go to any formal galas, here is an East-meets-West white silk coat you can wear with semi-formal dresses.

Although the weather is getting warmer, this thin coat may work for a cool night in late spring or summer. The classy cut will never go out of style, so you can get it now and wait until fall to wear it, too.

Now, let’s see how Zhang Ziyi pulled off some less formal Mandarin dresses.

The combination of sky blue and celery green looks cooling, definitely ideal for late spring and summer. The dress shown below offers not only this color combination but also a pretty print of lotus flowers, making it even more summery.

If you prefer a comfortable and hip-friendly A line for your summer dress, here’s a casual-looking choice.

No matter how warm the weather gets, black is still a suitable color for evening wear, especially given its slimming effect. However, all black may look a little monotonous, why not follow Zhang Zi-Yi’s example by selecting a black dress with a red floral print?

In case you don’t like floral patterns, just having red frog buttons and trims on your black dress can spice it up.

When it comes to mixing colors, vertical stripes can optically lengthen the body. Perhaps you can’t tell how vertical stripes elongate Zhang Ziyi from the photo below because it’s not a full-length shot, but you must agree that she looks fantastic in the stripes.

If you are of Asian descent, no matter where you were born, Zhang Ziyi can be your role model in fashion because she has a typical Asian girl’s body. She stands between 5’3” and 5’4”, about the average height of Asian girls. She has a very thin body, which is normally seen in Asian girls, too. Dresses that appear fabulous on her should look pretty good on most Asian girls on the skinny side. Why not learn from her impeccable ways of styling?

What Would You Wear for the Met Gala?

The Met Gala, also known as the Met Ball, is an annual fundraising event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in New York City. This year’s Met Gala, scheduled for May 4, will have a Chinese theme, titled “China: Through the Looking Glass.” It’s a collaboration between the Costume Institute and the Metropolitan Museum’s Department of Asian Art, while renowned filmmaker Wong Kar-wai is overseeing its art direction.

Hong Kong tycoon Silas Chou will host the upcoming gala. Co-chairs include Jennifer Lawrence, Gong Li, Marissa Mayer, Wendi Murdoch, and Anna Wintour.

If you could afford to attend the star-studded event, what would you wear?

The black gown with silver sparkles, shown above, would be an ideal choice. This is really an exquisite example of East-meets-West fashion design. It combines a high collar inspired by the Mandarin collar with the modern illusion neckline and mermaid silhouette. In the meantime, the silver sparkles are arranged into a pattern that looks distinctively Oriental. It’s hard to find a better match for the Chinese theme of the Met Gala!

Even so, here’s another mermaid gown that would work perfectly for the Met Gala, too.

This was originally designed as a wedding reception dress for Chinese brides. However, since American brides don’t wear red, it’s not too bridal for the Met Ball. The bright red color would make you the center of everyone’s attention, and the intricate gold embroidery on the bust of the dress would win lots of compliments!

If you like red but prefer a quieter tone, here’s an elegant option.

The subtle print of roses makes this cheongsam (traditional-style Mandarin dress) a lovely piece of art.

Speaking of art, what can be more artistic than hand painted dresses?

With hand painted pink peony flowers, this green gown is perfect for a spring soiree like the Met Gala. It would certainly take everyone’s breath away!

When it comes to floral designs, floral embroidery would be the most delicate art form to showcase.

The hand embroidery on this dress is as refined as it gets! The floral pattern is understated and tasteful. If it could come in a floor-length version, it would work fabulously for the Met Gala.

Here’s another knee-length dress that would be Met-Gala-appropriate if converted into floor length.

The colorblock dress is slimming while the Chinese-style floral brocade on its front panel is absolutely stunning. This is another successful example of East-meets-West fashion design!

Don’t you wish you could get one of the dresses displayed above for the Met Gala? Well, even if you can’t afford to go to the Met Ball, there may be local fundraising galas you can attend. In that case, you can still put on one of these dresses to blow everyone away!

Since I became sensible, I’ve been thinking female’s classic image could never leave the embroidered Qipao with slanting bosom, frogs and bindings. I was then living in a big family. The male elders were busy with their own things all day. So who usually accompanied me were all Qipao wearers including my mother, aunts as well as the aunt and cousin who were in college. They were then all “classic” Qipao wearers in my heart. Whenever taking me to play in the street, they always clustered round me. The Qipaos of various fabrics like colorful flowers, fluttered back and forth ,which was really a feast for eyes. Especially, the warm soft hand-feel of silks and satin as well as tender smooth luster can still remind me of the era where females were loved dearly, cherished and indulged.

Wait for drizzle

Music sounded so cool as if water was poured onto the ground. There was a lady upstairs. This lady with a loose black bun seemed to have just adjusted her mood. What were flying gently towards someone? They were mist and clouds from hills and flying willow catkins around the dam. Therefore, the tepidity of Qipao stretched to the boundless place in my heart. It was so warm! Among my faint wheeze, I hoped this moment could be everlasting.

According to my memories, Qipao should be full-length and with low slits extending at most to knee. In this way, Qipao wearer looked a little reserved while taking her mincing steps. What’s most worth with appreciating is the Qipao tailored with pure jacquard crepe-back satin whose color can be bluish white, blackish green or pearl grey……The fabrics should be lubricating and sparkling. However, instead of being too dazzling, the lustre should be like that of jade. Qipao wearer needs to have a comely oval face and have her hair carefully tied into a bun. Besides, the jade hairpin and jade bracelet should shine with warm and humid lustre. That kind of female is reserved, elegant and pretty. There are signs that she is well-educated and nurtured in a literary family. No matter moving or being quiet, she always looks like a traditional Chinese painting, genteel and refined.

Since I was a child, I’ve been fascinated by a Tang suit hidden in my grandmother’s chest. I adore her old-fashioned yet resplendent design; I adore the warm and soft handfeel of her fabric as well as her tender smooth lustre; I adore the feminine details on her trim and collar corner. With her frogs, embroidered patterns and edging, Qipao can always remind you of that age where females were loved dearly, cherished and indulged. The film Flower Like Years was in vogue several years ago. Instead of appreciating the film, more female petty bourgeoisies were obsessed with Maggie Cheung’s costumes-over thirty sets of Qipao which were as pretty and coquettish as night roses. They were exceedingly beautiful and tempting. However, what annoys a plain Jane is that Qipao is the most snobbish and ruthless one because of its incapability of hiding ugly parts of body.
